Police confirm Real Madrid staff member charged with assault after Champions League final incident
Champions League glory for Real Madrid was overshadowed by a post-match incident involving a member of their security staff.
Following Los Blancos' 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, a 52-year-old woman working security for the Spanish club was arrested for allegedly assaulting a steward. The incident reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over access to the pitch for family members of Real Madrid players.
The woman, a resident of Madrid, was detained for questioning and later charged with common assault. She's due in court on June 18th. According to reports, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has offered to assist with her legal defense.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police revealed that 56 arrests were made around the Champions League final, with most related to attempts to breach security. Despite these incidents, both the Metropolitan Police and the Football Association (FA) applauded the overall success of the security measures.
"The overwhelming majority of attempts to unlawfully gain access to Wembley were unsuccessful," stated a Met Police spokesperson, highlighting the coordinated effort with stewards and stadium staff.
The FA echoed this sentiment, acknowledging attempts by ticketless individuals but emphasizing the effectiveness of the new security protocols. They expressed gratitude to law enforcement and stewards for their role in maintaining order.
This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges in securing major sporting events. While security measures appear to have prevented large-scale breaches, this case highlights the potential for individual altercations.
