How the Europa League 'back up' option works
Teams that are eliminated from the Champions League group stage are not automatically out of European competition altogether. They have the opportunity to drop down into the Europa League, where they will compete in a play-off round to determine who progresses to the last 16.
The third-placed teams from each Champions League group will automatically qualify for the Europa League play-off round. They will be joined by the eight second-placed teams from the Europa League group stage.
The play-off round will be played over two legs, with the aggregate winners advancing to the Europa League round of 16.
What's next for the teams that are still in contention?
With the group stage nearing its conclusion, the teams that are still in contention for a place in the Round of 16 will be looking to secure their spots as soon as possible.
The final round of group matches will be played on December 13, 2023. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Round of 16, while the third-placed teams will drop down into the Europa League.
The Round of 16 knockout stage will begin on February 19, 2024. The draw for the Round of 16 will be held on December 15, 2023.
It is sure to be a tense and exciting finish to the Champions League group stage, as teams battle to reach the knockout stages and keep their dreams of European glory alive.
