Van Gaal claims Netherlands' loss to Argentina was rigged: 'Messi had to become the world champion'
Here is probably the weirdest (and the biggest) claim about the 2022 World Cup you will ever hear.
It comes from Louis van Gaal who was beaten by Leo Messi and Argentina's national team in the quarterfinals.
"I don't really want to say much about it. If you see how Argentina got their goals and how got our goals, and how some of Argentina's players went overboard and were not punished, then I think it's all scripted play.
"I mean everything I say by that. Did Messi have to become the world champion? I think so, yes," the 72-year-old added.
It was exactly that game when Messi celebrated his goal with a telling gesture right in front of Van Gaal and his coaching staff.
The match was officiated by famous Mateu Lahoz who completely lost control of the game, showing 19 yellow cards.
Van Gaal's logic is interesting. How could Messi's magnificent assist for Nahuel Molina be scripted? How could the penalty shootout get rigged? Were his players part of the 'script' then?
Seems like someone simply can't learn how to lose with pride – even despite having so much experience as a manager.
