Kepa slams Chelsea project, hints at continuing at Real Madrid beyond 2024
Kepa confirmed in a media chat on Thursday that Chelsea tried their best to keep him when Real Madrid and Bayern Munich came calling for his signature in August.
“My intention is to stay for more than a year," Kepa told Cope.
"I felt it was time for a change of scenery. I wanted to stay. But it only took a couple of calls because when Real Madrid call, it is different. I felt the Chelsea project was not the right one."
Kepa continues to sing Real Madrid's praises.
“The aura that is breathed in the BernabĂ©u is special. I really wanted to play in the stadium, because the last 3 years I played there with Chelsea, I can already feel what a comeback is like at home.”
Real Madrid only signed Kepa because of the unexpected injury to Thibaut Courtois at the start of the season.
Kepa's deal with Real Madrid is a one-year loan. It means the club can let him return to Chelsea at the end of the season.
If Kepa stays perhaps Andriy Lunin will have to leave.
It must be noted that Kepa took a pay cut to join Real Madrid.
