Full list of every club that turned down Mason Greenwood before shock Getafe move

It has been reported that a host of different clubs declined to sign Mason Greenwood before he made a deadline day loan move to Getafe.

Earlier in the month, it was confirmed that Greenwood will continue his career away from Manchester United after a decision was made on the back of the internal investigation conducted by the Old Trafford club.

On transfer deadline day, it was confirmed that Greenwood will spend the 23/24 season on loan at Spanish La Liga side Getafe.

A statement from United read: “Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance. The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”

According to The Athletic, a host of different clubs rejected the chance to sign Greenwood before the 21-year-old move to Getafe.

The report claimed that agents approached all manner of clubs, with Brentford being one of the English sides who declined.

German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, Italian duo AS Roma and AC Milan as well as clubs within the Saudi Professional League all distanced themselves from signing the Englishman.

It has also been claimed that Serie A side Lazio showed interest in Greenwood but failed to reach an agreement before the Italian transfer window closed at 7pm.

Getafe have since been hit with criticism over their signing of Greenwood.

Ana Bella Estevez of the Ana Bella Foundation said to the Mirror: “Getafe executives should never have hired Mason Greenwood and should immediately overturn their decision. If you’re a public-facing organisation like Getafe there is no excuse to take a neutral stance on violence against women — you must take moral responsibility.”

Manager Jose Bordales defended the club’s decision, he said: “It is a very delicate situation to trivialise that issue. Everyone knows what happened and appropriate measures were taken.

“Everyone knows how it ended, with a non-conviction. He is a footballer of a very high level and arrives at Getafe with huge enthusiasm.”
