Wolves players uncertain about Lopetegui's future amid transfer frustration
Wolves players are uncertain whether Julen Lopetegui will be in charge for their Premier League opener at Manchester United on August 14, amid growing tension between the manager and the club.
Lopetegui, who led Wolves to safety last season despite taking over when they were bottom of the table in November, has expressed his frustration at the club's lack of activity in the transfer market.
The Spaniard has been particularly critical of Wolves' failure to replace Ruben Neves, who was sold to Al-Hilal for £47 million this summer. Wolves have only signed defender Matt Doherty and goalkeeper Tom King on free transfers, leading to Lopetegui's anger.
Wolves chairman Jeff Shi has written an open letter on the club website, explaining the need to meet Financial Fair Play requirements. Shi wrote: "As the owners and management of the club, one important thing we must learn and follow is the Premier League's rules on profit and sustainability (formerly called financial fair play or abbreviated to FFP)."
To hit that target, Wolves have recouped £91 million in player sales this summer. However, Lopetegui is still unhappy with the club's lack of investment in the transfer market.
Wolves are considering appointing former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil as Lopetegui's replacement. O'Neil led Bournemouth to comfortable safety in the Premier League last season and is seen as a good fit for Wolves.
It remains to be seen whether Lopetegui will be in charge for Wolves' opening game of the season. However, the uncertainty surrounding his future is a major distraction for the club as they prepare for the new campaign.
