Will Virgil van Dijk get a 3-match ban following red card vs Newcastle? Answered More on Tribuna.com: https://tribuna.com/en/news/liverpoolfc-2023-08-27-will-virgil-van-dijk-get-a-3match-ban-following-red-card-vs-newcastle-answered/?utm_source=copy
For the second week in a row, Liverpool run the risk of having one of their star players suspended after receiving a straight red card.
This time, it's Virgil van Dijk who was sent off, and Jurgen Klopp believes that his foul barely deserved a red card, let alone a lengthy ban.
"There is no active contact from Virgil van Dijk," he told Sky Sports. "It is just going for the ball and on the way there, he made contact. For this contact, getting three games, oh my God, unbelievable. We will see."
Fortunately, as the sending-off was for denying a goalscoring opportunity and not a violent foul, it should only be a one-game ban for the Liverpool captain.
Still, some voices on social media believe that Van Dijk should receive an extra punishment for dissent.
"If we're serious about this new age of stamping out dissent, Virgil van Dijk should have his ban extended. Appalling behaviour towards the official," journalist Daniel Storey tweeted.
If Van Dijk's punishment remains as it is, he will only miss the Aston Villa game next weekend.
