'Modern-day David Beckham': Former coach hails Liverpool's £60m steal Dominik Szoboszlai
Jesse Marsch, who played a crucial role in Dominik Szoboszlai's youth development, has praised the Liverpool £60m summer signing's exceptional Premier League start. Marsch even likened Szoboszlai to a modern-day David Beckham.
Marsch, who coached Szoboszlai at Red Bull's New York franchise and later at Salzburg and Leipzig, shared insights from their time together in a new interview with The Telegraph. He firmly believed that the Hungarian midfielder was destined for greatness, and his early-season performances for Liverpool have only reaffirmed that belief.
"He's a special player," said Marsch. "He has the potential to be one of the best players in the world. He has everything you need: the technical ability, the physical attributes, and the mental strength."
Marsch recalled a specific moment when he knew that Szoboszlai was ready to make a big impact. "We had a team meeting and I stood Szobo in front of everyone and said, 'This is now your time. You are ready to lead this team'."
"He did exactly that. The following day he scored the first goal in the Austrian Cup final, which we won 5-0. Then we steamrolled through the rest of the league. We won 7-2 at Rapid Vienna. They had never given up seven goals at home in their 120-year history, but again Szobo scored one and had two or three assists."
Marsch also compared Szoboszlai to David Beckham, who was known for his long-range passing and crossing ability. "When the ball is on his right foot he can put it anywhere he wants," he explained. "The precision and the pace he can put on the ball is ridiculous. And I say ‘modern day’ because he is more mobile and more dynamic."
Szoboszlai has made a strong start to his Liverpool career, scoring two goals and providing two assists in his first six appearances. He has been praised by manager Jurgen Klopp for his "maturity" and "quality".
Marsch believes that Szoboszlai has the potential to be a key player for Liverpool in the years to come. "He's a joy to watch," he said. "He's a special talent and I'm excited to see what he can achieve."
