Man United Legend Says Messi's Arrival Saw Him Sacked by Inter Miami
After departing from Paris Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi made his move to the MLS franchise Inter Miami in July. Phil Neville, a former manager and Manchester United legend, shed light on the circumstances that led to his departure from the club, making a startling revelation involving Messi.
Messi's incorporation into the team in July had a transformative effect, taking a squad that had not secured a victory in 11 consecutive games to clinch the championship title in the inaugural Leagues Cup—an historic achievement for the club.
However, the arrival of Messi had an adverse impact on one individual in particular—Phil Neville.
Neville's Candid Disclosures About Messi
Phil Neville was at the helm of Inter Miami until a fortnight before Lionel Messi's entrance, when he was replaced by former Barcelona and Argentina manager Tata Martino.
While providing insights into the events surrounding his departure, the Manchester United legend spoke on the Offside with Taylor Twellman podcast ahead of the Leagues Cup final. Neville shared, "I had an underlying feeling that I wouldn't remain [in Miami] upon [Messi's] arrival. My lack of confidence in myself wasn't the issue, but rather the uniqueness of the situation; this wasn't akin to signing players like Gonzalo Higuain or Blaise Matuidi."
Neville asserted that his awareness of the impending developments helped him navigate the circumstance, and he commended the manner in which David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, handled the situation.
"I hold no resentment, animosity, or indignation. Their transparency with me was remarkable. In my career, apart from the accolades I earned, there have been two pivotal moments—my departure from Manchester United and now from Miami."
At the conclusion of his 18-month tenure, the 46-year-old was relieved of his managerial duties. Subsequently, he swiftly transitioned into the role of assistant manager for the Canada national team following his exit.
