Jarell Quansah: Who is the 'stylish' center-back who made his Liverpool debut vs. Newcastle?
The Newcastle game was extremely eventful, with Liverpool staging a comeback in the most demanding circumstances. One man down and 1-0 down before the half-hour's mark, the Reds managed to win the game thanks to Darwin Nunez's brace.
Liverpool fans will cherish the game for a long time but there's one person who's never going to forget it. We're talking about Jarell Quansah.
The center-back made his debut for the Reds in this game, replacing Joel Matip in the 77th minute.
So who is Quansah? The defender has been at Liverpool since the age of five, progressing through the youth ranks and making the first-team squad twice in the 2021/22 season.
He spent the second part of the 2022/23 season on loan with Bristol Rovers, making 16 appearances for the League One side.
Quansah returned to Anfield for the pre-season and featured in several games, impressing with his defending skills and composure on the ball.
Liverpool's official website describes him as a 'stylish center-half and notes that he is 'blessed with great pace'. The latter could help him in Jurgen Klopp's system as Liverpool plays with a high line which requires defenders to run a lot.
Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton, the same Joey Barton who played for Man City and Newcastle and was notorious for his violent personality during his playing career, thinks that sky is the limit for Quansah.
“I’m mindful of not heaping too much on the kids but, why not?” Barton told Bristol Post when asked whether Jarell could one day play for England's senior team.
“He’s as good on the ball that you’ll need to be in terms of building out from the back. He’s going to get bigger, he’s going to get stronger, he’s going to get faster. His anticipation of the game is going to be better because more senior games get you that.
“The one concern we had when we brought him in was his heading ability because we knew he could leap, he could score a goal at the back post, but he’s getting well-versed in the physical, aerial contact.
“But the heading he’s doing from a defensive standpoint is what any senior would be proud of. He has an enormous future in front of him.”
Jarell is certainly a prospect to look forward to but probably one for the next season than this campaign. Neil Jones reported a week ago that Quansah is set to leave Liverpool on loan. A season playing regular football for a Championship or lower Premier League side would get him ready for a first-team role at Anfield.
