Djordje Petrovic takes up Azpilicueta's previous shirt number, explains unusual choice
Chelsea have confirmed that new signing Djordje Petrovic will wear the no. 28 on his back this season.
The Serbian joined Chelsea from MLS side New England Revolution on a £14m deal, signing a seven-year contract.
The 23-year-old will compete with Robert Sanchez, who took up the no. 1 following Kepa's loan move to Real Madrid.
The previous holder of the no. 28 is Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta.
"I’m very happy to wear number 28 and I know it means a lot at this club," Petrovic told the club's website, referencing the former captain.
"I asked for number 99 originally [he wore it for New England] but I was told it was too high for the Premier League. I saw what was available after that and I liked the look of the No.28 jersey."
