Arsenal agree £10m deal with Nottingham Forest for Matt Turner
Arsenal have agreed a fee of up to £10million with Nottingham Forest for the transfer of goalkeeper Matt Turner.
The deal is thought to be an initial £7million, with a further £3million in potential add-ons. Turner is now set to travel to Nottingham in order to complete the move.
Turner was signed from New England Revolution last summer for around £5million and made seven appearances in his debut campaign, keeping five clean sheets. Despite failing to displace Aaron Ramsdale as Arsenal's number one, the American won plenty of admirers for his shot-stopping ability and his work on the international stage.
Turner's exit is set to pave the way for Arsenal to bring in David Raya from Brentford. The Gunners are in ongoing talks for the Spanish stopper, who is valued at around £40million. However, there is confidence that a compromise can be reached for the 27-year-old, who has just 12 months remaining on his contract. Bayern Munich have also shown an interest this summer, but Raya is keen on a move to the Emirates.
Arsenal have admired Raya for a long time, and tried to sign him before bringing in Aaron Ramsdale in 2021. The Spaniard is now expected to come in and compete for the number one spot with Ramsdale.
Arteta: Competition for places is key
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said that the competition for places in the squad is key to the club's success.
"The competition always exists whoever it is," Arteta said. "That’s how it has to feel like. It has to feel like this and if it doesn’t feel like this we’re not gonna get the best out of each player. So we’d better feel like this and make sure we all feel like this. Me first."
Arteta also said that he is confident that both Turner and Raya will be important members of the squad next season.
"They are both top goalkeepers," Arteta said. "Matt has done a great job for us and we are grateful for his contribution. David is a very talented player and we are excited to see what he can do for us."
