Alex Greenwood's face swollen and beaten up as Lionesses fly home from World Cup final

Alex Greenwood sported a shiner as she touched back down from Down Under following the Women's World Cup final on Sunday.

Greenwood was one of the starters who were hapless to stop an impressive Spanish side win their first ever Women's World Cup. And the Manchester City full-back was in the wars during the game at the Stadium Australia, when she collided with Spain's winger Salma Paralluelo.

The English star took a knee to the face in the 77th minute, causing her to receive lengthy treatment for a cut to the eye. Paralluelo was given a yellow card for her actions.

And the true extent of the injury was on full-display as the Lionesses began their journey back home. Greenwood was snapped with a black eye, and her gruesome cut stitched-up.

"If it's a patch-up job, Greenwood will stay on. If there is any whiff of concussion, then a key part of the defence will be gone. This is not a good sight."

Greenwood was able to play on despite the sickening cut - and her treatment played a part in the 13 minutes of stoppage time added on at the end of the game. However, England weren't able to find the net to send the game into extra-time.

It was Spain's Olga Carmona who was the difference maker, beating Mary Earps in the first half.

However, there was heartbreak for Carmona after the game when she found out her father had passed.
