Shakira and Gerard Piqué were in 'open relationship for years' before bitter split

Shakira and Gerard Pique were in an 'open relationship' before the couple went their separate ways last summer.

Shakira accused Pique of cheating on her, which the ex-Barcelona man has denied, as the pair bitterly split. However, sources close to the couple have now claimed they were in an open relationship before the break-up.

Spanish broadcaster José Antonio Avilés claimed: "There is an agreement where 'you do what you want and I do what I want', but in the face of the media we are still a couple."

While, he also added Pique was shocked when Shakira took to social to announce their split: "He has been annoyed to find out from the press!" Pilar Vidal added: "Pique does not want speculation that the reason for the breakup was infidelity.

"He was surprised by the statement because the one who takes the initiative is her." Shakira alleged she discovered Pique was cheating after she found a used pot of strawberry jam.

Pique has since gone public with his new flame Clara Chia Marti, a 24-year-old PR student who worked for one of his companies.

Shakira has seemingly taken swipes at the couple in her new breakup song 'Empty Cup'. She sings in Spanish: "You are always busy with so much business. It would be nice, my love, a little leisure.

"Relax here on the sofa and give me your attention. The phone rings, use your hand with me I know you're hot, but I'm much hotter."

The Colombian's song comes just weeks after Spanish media alleged Pique and Clara are looking to tie the knot, and an insider told Spanish press: "Gerard Pique and Clara Chia are going to get married... they have taken this very important decision."
