Millwall have confirmed the death of 70-year-old owner and chairman John Berylson following a 'tragic accident' on Tuesday.

American Berylson took over Millwall in 2007 and was hailed for his efforts in fending off a potential land sale around the club's home ground, The Den. The former United States Marine reportedly invested £100million of his own money into the east London outfit during his 16 years in charge, overseeing two promotions from League One to the Championship consistency witnessed in recent years.

"John, who turned 70 last month, lost his life in a tragic accident on Tuesday morning, and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with his wife, Amy, his three children, Jennifer, James, and Elizabeth, and the rest of the Berylson family," read a club statement.

"John’s sudden and tragic passing will unquestionably impact all those who were fortunate to have known him. He was a truly great man, incredibly devoted to his family, and a person of such remarkable generosity, warmth, and kindness.

"He lived a storied life, one full of colour and joy, and was infinitely thoughtful of others with an endless desire to share his immense knowledge and experiences to help people."

Berylson attended a number of prestigious American universities and earned qualification from Harvard, Brown and New York before moving into the finance industry.

He eventually established a successful career refinancing banks in Rhode Island before founding a venture capital fund called Chestnut Hill, which was used to front his takeover of Millwall. It was under his ownership that the club rallied to place eighth in the Championship last term, matching their highest league finish during his tenure.

"RIP to the best owner our club has ever had. Stayed true to his word and it’s a shame we couldn’t have won promotion for him," tweeted one Millwall fan in response to Tuesday's tragic news. "One of the saddest days in the history of out club."

Former Millwall right-back Alan Dunne wrote an emotional tribute to his old boss: "My deepest condolences to not only my Chairman for many years but also friend. John was a gentleman who put Millwall back on the map. What he has done for the club will always be remembered and can only thank him for everything he done for me and MILLWALL."

Peter Varney, executive vice-chairman of the Millwall Community Trust, also paid homage to the club figurehead: "Desperately sad to hear of the sudden death of Millwall Chairman John Berylson. He was a model chairman and was well regarded by all connected with the club. My thoughts are with his wife and family at this time.

A list of official club accounts sent their commiserations in response to the news. Even bitter rivals West Ham replied: "Everyone at West Ham United sends their deepest condolences to John’s family, friends and all at Millwall during this tragic time."

Millwall's club statement continued: "John revelled in the club’s underdog status and mentality. He related strongly to such values and identity and adored Millwall supporters. He was fiercely loyal to all his staff, and both they and the fan base will miss him beyond measure."

It went on to say a book of condolence will be available for signing at The Den from 11 a.m. on Wednesday (July 5).
