Man Utd sensation Garnacho hints at new shirt number on birthday cake
Alejandro Garnacho enjoyed a thoroughly impressive breakthrough season at Man Utd and the young forward has been rewarded with a bumper new contract - and seemingly a new shirt number
Manchester United starlet Alejandro Garnacho has dropped the biggest indication is he is set to take on the legendary '7' shirt at Old Trafford.
The Argentine winger, 19, linked up with United's academy in October 2020 with the club forking out £420,000 to his boyhood side Atletico Madrid.
After impressing in the youth set-up at Carrington, Garnacho was handed his first-team debut by Erik ten Hag in the Europa League and the teenager ended the 2022/23 season as one of the club's most influential players.
Despite defeat in the FA Cup final, his impressive breakthrough campaign was rewarded with an improved contract until June 2028 - Garnacho increasing his salary tenfold by penning a new £50k-a-week deal.
On top of the lucrative terms, the youngster has also indicated he could be set to follow in the footsteps of Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo by taking on the iconic no.7 jersey.
The rumour sparked into life after pictures were released of Garnacho celebrating his 19th birthday on Saturday (July 1st) with an Argentina-themed cake sporting the number 7 as the showpiece.
Last season's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award winner has also hinted at a change of number on his official Instagram account.
Posting a thank you message to his supporters for reaching 7 million followers, the Argentina hero attached a '7 million' graphic with the number posing on the back of a Man Utd shirt.
The no.7 jersey has been incumbent since the end of 2022 with previous holder Ronaldo axed as a result of his tumultuous interview alongside Talk TV host Piers Morgan.
In a car crash 90-minute exchange, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner slated the lack of development at Carrington, manager Ten Hag and the Man Utd hierarchy - causing him to seek a new home in Saudi Arabia following the culmination of the Qatar World Cup.
