Declan Rice is world's eighth £100m transfer

Declan Rice has joined an illustrious list of footballers to cost over £100million - but it's no guarantee of success.

Rice has swapped West Ham for Arsenal in a bid to compete for major honours and to play Champions League football after a deal worth £105m was agreed by the two clubs.

Only seven players in the history of the sport have ever commanded a nine-figure fee before Rice - with three notable flops.

e360hubs have taken a look at the fortunes of those to have proceeded the 24-year-old - who will have plenty of pressure placed on his shoulders.

Jack Grealish - £100m

Coming in at £100m on the dot, Jack Grealish left his boyhood club Aston Villa for Manchester City for £100m back in the summer of 2021.

It took Grealish time to fit into the system of Pep Guardiola as he played a backseat role in claiming his first Premier League title.

Last season was a different story, with Grealish playing a central role in their Premier League comeback triumph before lifting a Treble.

Despite admitting that he didn't play well in the Champions League final, Grealish is well on his way to justifying his astronomical price tag.

Joao Felix - £105 million

Atletico Madrid went big on the signing of Joao Felix from Benfica back in 2019 - despite critics saying he wouldn't fit into their defensive system.

Although Diego Simeone's men did win La Liga in his second season at the club, the Portugal international left Luis Suarez to do the heavy lifting.

Felix, 23, failed to impress on loan at Chelsea last season with his career now up in the air, with his contract running until the summer of 2027.

Philippe Coutinho - £105 million

Philippe Coutinho became one of the biggest flops in football history after forcing a move to Barcelona from Liverpool for an initial £105m in 2018.

That fee could've risen to around £137m with add-ons, but Coutinho couldn't justify it before being sent on loan to Bayern Munich and Aston Villa.

A permanent move to Villa Park has followed, scoring once across his 20 Premier League appearances last season having recently celebrated his 31st birthday.

Antoine Griezmann - £107 million

Antoine Griezmann spent five years at Atletico Madrid and became a hero to fans before joining Barcelona for an initial £107m in 2019.

Griezmann, 32, spent three years at the Nou Camp, scoring 35 goals across 102 appearances before rejoining Atletico - missing out on a first La Liga title while away.

Having now returned to Atletico, Barcelona won the league without him, but he did manage 16 goals in all competitions.

Enzo Fernandez - £106.8 million

The latest member in the £100m club before Rice was Enzo Fernandez, who swapped Benfica for Chelsea in early 2023 after winning the World Cup.

The agile midfielder cost an initial £106.8m despite only having 29 senior appearances in European football to his name.

Chelsea went on to finish 12th in the Premier League table - but fans have seen enough to expect the Argentinian to shine under Mauricio Pochettino.

Kylian Mbappe - £163 million

Kylian Mbappe joined PSG from Monaco while still a teenager - but didn't come cheap with a fee that has risen to £163m.

Mbappe has gone on to win 10 domestic trophies while scoring 212 goals across 260 appearances - but hasn't tasted Champions League glory.

Mbappe, who grew up with a love for Real Madrid, has also stated that he will not be signing a new contract with PSG scrambling to find a solution before he leaves for nothing next summer.

Neymar remains the most expensive transfer in history after swapping Barcelona for PSG in a bid to fire the club to Champions League glory.

The Brazil icon hasn't been able to fulfil that quest, but has scored 118 goals since his £198 move back in 2017.

Neymar has not been able to make more than 22 Ligue 1 appearances in any of his six seasons at the club due to injuries - but still has time on his side at 31.
