Canadian footballer Quinn becomes the first out trans and non-binary player to feature at a World Cup

Canada midfielder Quinn has become the first ever trans and non binary player to ever feature at a World Cup.

The 26-year-old had previously made history a couple of years ago when they became the first trans and non binary athlete to win an Olympic medal, back in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics.

Now, they have written themselves into history books once again, repeating a similar achievement at this year's FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Quinn featured in Canada's World Cup opener against Nigeria, with the game ending in a dull goalless draw, resulting in a frustrating 90 minutes for both sides.

They were unable to help Bev Priestman's side to a win against Nigeria.

Breaking records at an international level is nothing new for Quinn, they not only became the first trans and non binary athlete at the Olympics, they also secured the gold medal in 2021.

Quinn and co. have entered the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as one of the favourites but their stalemate against Nigeria proved to be a difficult start to the tournament, especially given that Christine Sinclair's penalty was saved by the Nigeria keeper, Chimaka Nnadozie.

Canada are currently alongside hosts Australia and the Republic of Ireland in their group, the Matildas getting off to a good start on home ground beating Republic of Ireland 1-0 thanks to a Stephanie Catley penalty in the second half.

After the Nigeria result, Canada are set to take on Republic of Ireland before eventually facing off against hosts Australia. Depending on how results go in both of these fixtures, Quinn and their team-mates could very well progress to the knockout stages.

Given that Canada are in Group B, which has been lined up along with Group D in the tournament bracket, it could very well be that Quinn's Canada face off against Sarina Weigman's Lionesses in the round of 16.
