World's biggest stadium which held 250,000 people is now abandoned and falling apart
It's bigger than Old Trafford, the Emirates and the Nou Camp combined, but chances are you've never heard about one of the biggest stadiums in the world, which is now abandoned
One of the biggest stadiums in the world that once held 250,000 people is now falling apart.
Think of the great arenas around the globe and your mind is probably drawn to the likes of the Maracana, the Nou Camp or Wembley. But all three of those combined only just account for the capacity of the Great Strahov Stadium, which is world's largest abandoned ground.
Located in Prague, Czech Republic, the abandoned relic is three times as wide and three times as long as a regulation sized football pitch, covering an area of 63,500 square metres. Yet the stadium's primary purpose following its construction between the first and second world wars wasn't football, rather large-scale gymnastics displays, which it held throughout the 20th century.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, the incredible structure cannot be demolished, which means it remains largely abandoned, save occasional use as a training base.
The stadium was previously used for large-scale gymnastic displays. |
Up to 250,000 people would pack into the Great Strahov Stadium, making it one of the biggest stadiums in the world. |
