UEFA charge Jose Mourinho over Anthony Taylor spat as Roma slapped with five sanctions

European football's governing body, UEFA, has charged Jose Mourinho for lashing out at referee Anthony Taylor after his side lost the Europa League final to Sevilla on penalties.

Roma manager Mourinho was captured calling the Premier League official a "f***ing disgrace" in the car park of the Puskas Arena after the full-time whistle. The Giallorossi have been hit with five sanctions overall, excluding Mourinho's charge for using Insulting and/or abusive language against a match official.

A UEFA statement read: "Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated in accordance with Article 55 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR) following the UEFA Europa League final match between Sevilla FC and AS Roma (1-1) played on 31 May 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.

"Charges against Sevilla FC: Invasion of the field of play, Art. 16(2)(a) DR; Throwing of objects, Art. 16(2)(b) DR; Lighting of fireworks, Art. 16(2)(c) DR; Improper conduct of team, Art: 15(4) DR.

"Charges against AS Roma: Throwing of objects, Art. 16(2)(b) DR; Lighting of fireworks, Art. 16(2)(c) DR; Acts of damage, Art. 16(2)(f) DR; Crowd disturbances, Art. 16(2)(h) DR; Improper conduct of team, Art: 15(4) DR; Insulting / abusive language against a match official (Mr. José Mourinho), Article 15(1)(b) DR."

As well as calling the Englishman a disgrace, Mourinho criticised Taylor's "bull****' decisions" at the Puskas Arena. However, the football community didn't appear to agree after the official received widespread praise for his performance.

The abuse against Taylor continued after footage emerged showing Roma fans accost the English official at the airport as he attempted to leave Hungary on Thursday.

'The Special One' spent much of the match protesting with officials in a stop-start affair that ended 1-1 after extra time. However, Sevilla collected a record-extending seventh Europa League crown after winning 4-1 on penalties.

However, Roma came away complaining after feeling they had two clear penalty appeals turned down by the officials. The Italians were hoping to clinch European silverware in back-to-back campaigns after they were crowned the inaugural Europa Conference League champions last term.

Wednesday's final in Budapest produced a European record 13 yellow cards, with Jose Luis Mendilibar celebrating the biggest success of his career to date.

UEFA confirmed the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) "will decide on the matter in due course," with punishments still to be decided. In any case, Mourinho may not be at the Stadio Olimpico when they're handed down, with rumours circulating that the Portuguese is being lined up to take over at PSG.
