UEFA change Super Cup rules ahead of meeting between Sevilla and Manchester City

The annual meeting between the Champions League and Europa League winners takes place in Athens, Greece at the Karaiskakis Stadium on Wednesday 16 August.

Sevilla, having won the Europa League for a seventh time in 17 years on penalties against AS Roma, are looking to end a wretched run of five straight defeats in the Super Cup final.

City, meanwhile, have never competed in the competition and will look to mark their debut by adding it to their trophy cabinet after beating Inter Milan in Istanbul, Turkey

But the format for the final has been changed, as per Mundo Deportivo,

With UEFA deciding that there will be no extra time. Instead, if the two sides cannot be separated after 90 minutes the game will go straight to penalties.

City will also participate in the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time, alongside the other winners of each confederation's leading competition, in Saudi Arabia in December.

However this will be the last edition of the tournament under its current form as the format will be revamped and expanded to a 32-team competition.

Starting from 2025, it will take place every four years - with the first being hosted by the United States.

UEFA will have 12 representatives, including Champions League winners and teams with a high coefficient. Six teams from CONMEBOL, as well as four from CONCACAF and one for the host country'.

"The Fifa Club World Cup 2025 will be the pinnacle of elite professional men’s club football,” FIFA president Infantino said on the brand new format.

“With the required infrastructure in place together with a massive local interest, the United States is the ideal host to kick off this new, global tournament.”
