Tottenham lining up £50million swoop for Jadon Sancho as Man Utd seek more cash

Tottenham are considering a £50million swoop for Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho.

The Old Trafford star, 23, has struggled with fitness and form over the past year - and Reds boss Erik ten Hag sent him to the Netherlands midway through last season to recuperate - both physically and mentally.

But if that break sparked an initial improvement, in the main his performances have been patchy - at best.

And with Sancho no longer an automatic pick for England either - he has been left out of the squad for the Euro qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia - rival clubs are monitoring his situation closely.

Tottenham are one of those definitely interested as they attempt to regroup and rebuild ahead of newly-appointed manager Ange Postecoglou’s first campaign.

Negotiations for relegated Leicester City playmaker James Maddison began last week.

Now, in addition to a £40m offer for the Foxes’ England playmaker, Spurs are poised to join the race for his Three Lions colleague Sancho, who has won 23 caps.

United, having spent £72.9m to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund two years ago, are likely to want close to £60m to consider doing business.

Dortmund have also expressed an interest in taking the former-Manchester City youth product back but only on a season’s loan.

That sort of deal does not work for the Premier League giants. With no takeover imminent, Ten Hag knows he must raise cash to invest in other areas deemed crucial to his team’s progress.

That is why Spurs feel it is worth testing United’s resolve to keep a player, who has yet to reach anything near the heights produced as a teenager in Germany.

Sancho’s most recent chance to shine came last weekend in the FA Cup final against Manchester City as United’s Brazilian winger Antony was out injured.

But he failed to make a mark and was hooked in the second half of the 2-1 defeat - raising further doubts about his ability to be a regular in Ten Hag’s starting line-up.

United, of course, are chasing £100m Spurs skipper Harry Kane, while the North Londoners have been linked with a move for Old Trafford defender Harry Maguire.
