Sandro Tonali reportedly broke down in tears after learning he was being let go by AC Milan.
The midfielder is expected to sign a six-year contract with Newcastle and will complete his medical in the next few days. Tonali's agent Giuseppe Riso has told Italian media that the transfer could be worth up to 80m euros (£68.5million), including add-ons.
Per transfer expert FabrizioRomano, Riso said: “[The] Newcastle project is perfect for Tonali, he will be key player for them,” said Riso.
The signing would be a real statement of intent for the Magpies, who are looking forward to Champions League football after a fine first full season under Eddie Howe. However, the move will be a wrench for Tonali, who was said to be devastated after being told Milan had accepted an offer for him.
According to La Repubblica, the 23-year-old wanted to stay at the San Siro and even saw himself spending his entire career with the Serie A giants.
The report adds that he was so upset at the news he was even left in tears. Tonali has been a key player for Milan since arriving from Brescia in 2021, making 130 appearances and winning the Serie A title in 2021/22.
Milan fans are also upset by his departure with one saying: “Newcastle's best summer signing! Milan fans will miss you Tonali!,” said one.
Another said: “Newcastle, with all due respect, are a project but they will never be an as important project as Milan. Wish Tonali all the best but I bet he would rather be with the Rossoneri.”
A third added: “AC Milan should be ashamed of themselves for forcing him to move.” Another said: “I clearly see Newcastle's ambition and that would be in line with him. Hope NUFC take care of him because current Milan management can't.”
