Fans baffled by price Liverpool are paying for Alexis Mac Allister after sealing transfer
Baffled football fans have been left flabbergasted at the cut-price fee Liverpool are paying for Alexis Mac Allister.
The Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder was booked in for a medical at the Merseysiders' Melwood training centre on Tuesday ahead of finalising a lucrative move to the north west. Jurgen Klopp's no.1 priority in the summer window is revamping the Reds' ageing midfield and the versatile Mac Allister was one of the standout candidates on his transfer wishlist.
The World Cup winner hit 10 goals across the 2022/23 season to aid the Seagulls in their quest for a first European adventure, and Mac Allister was visibly in tears after playing his final match at the Amex Stadium.
Boss Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that the Argentine would likely leave when the window opened in June. "I think it can be the last game for Alexis and Moises [Caicedo]," he admitted post-match.
"I am really sorry because they are two great people and two great players but the policy of Brighton is like this. It is right that they can leave, they can play at higher level."
After passing the formalities of a medical check, Mac Allister's impending move to Merseyside was confirmed on Twitter by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano - but fans were left double-checking the reported £35m fee.
"£35m for Mac Allister in today's market. Make a mural for Jorg Schmadkte," harked one supporter following the announcement of Liverpool's new Sporting Director. "£35m for Mac Allister is signing of the summer before the transfer window even opened. Daylight robbery," agreed a second.
"£35m FOR MAC ALLISTER??? That’s the signing of the transfer window already surely," praised a third. "£35M for Mac Allister is unbelievable business," lauded a fourth. "35m for Mac Allister?? This might be the bargain of the summer," commended a fifth.
While a sixth argued the move should free up funds to pursue Klopp's additional targets, commenting: "£35m for Mac Allister means there’s no excuse to not be splashing £40m+ on 2 other midfielders now. He’s gonna be our cheapest signing of the window."
The Reds are in the market for at least one more midfielder with defensive reinforcements also a priority this summer. A backup goalkeeper might also be a requirement should Caoimhin Kelleher opt to leave Anfield and test himself as a no.1 elsewhere.
