Chelsea spent almost £50m per win this season as Todd Boehly's nightmare reign continues
Chelsea were the Premier League's least effective spenders for the 2022/23 season as they won just 11 matches despite Todd Boehly's stunning £532million total expenditure on transfers.
Chelsea spent a shocking £48.4million per-win in the Premier League this season.
The Blues have employed a wild transfer policy, splashing eye-watering sums on swathes of unneeded players since Todd Boehly took over the club last summer.
Their baffling strategy has seen 17 players arrive at Stamford Bridge under the American which has cost them an astonishing £532m in total.
Boehly’s ‘let’s just throw money at it’ approach persisted in January, with the Blues breaking the record for new signings made mid-way through a season while spending more than all of the world’s other football clubs put together.
But their recruitment was seemingly conducted without any coherent plan as they signed forwards such as Joao Felix, Noni Madueke and Mykhaylo Mudryk, only for them to spend considerable time on the bench.
As such, their form only worsened when Frank Lampard became Chelsea’s third manager of the campaign. And the west Londoners finished down in 12th place, having notched just 11 league wins.
Thanks to a report by Wagering Advisors, the club were found to have spent an astonishing £48m per-victory. That was more than double that of relegated Southampton - the second worst side on the list.
Bottom-placed Saints' position may have been skewed by their atrocious form, winning just six games. But they certainly couldn't complain about a lack of investment, spending £125m in total on their way to registering £21m per-victory.
Nottingham Forest followed in third with £18m spent on each of their nine wins. Forest stunned fans by bringing in a whopping 30 players worth £170m upon their return to the top flight.
Yet there were also clubs that demonstrated exactly how recruitment should be done. Despite splashing a considerable £168m, Arsenal showed it was money well spent by winning 26 matches (£6.5m per-win) on their way to finishing second in the league.
Meanwhile, champions Manchester City only spent £4.7m per-win, putting them 15th on the list of expenditure per-wins.
Brighton and Brentford both enjoyed spectacular seasons, spending under £50m and winning 18 and 15 matches respectively.
The Seagulls showed that you don’t always need to splash out to reap the benefits of signings, having impressed all season long and cemented their place as the most effective recruiters with £2.7m per-win.
Roberto de Zerbi’s side will play European football next season, a feat not shared by Chelsea, despite spending less than a tenth of the Blues.
