BREAKING: Man Utd drop pursuit of Mason Mount following third rejected bid

Manchester United have decided that they no longer want to sign Masn Mount from Chelsea, after the Blues turned down a third bid.

United have been linked with signing Mount for a number of weeks now with the midfielder reportedly having his eyes set on a move to Old Trafford.

He certainly looked to be saying goodbye to Stamford Bridge when the Premier League season ended last month, following their final game of the campaign against Newcastle United.

Teammates Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell didn't seem too confident that he would remain in west London, but the player himself avoided answering questions about his future.

With Chelsea having to sort out their potential problems with FFP the would be buyers were given until the end of the month to sort the deal out.

It looked like it would happen with Erik ten Hag's side putting in a third bid on Friday as they attempted to get closer to their rival's valuation.

However Mauricio Pochettino's side clearly didn't feel that the offer was good enough for a player with only one year left on his deal and rejected it.

According to The Times, United feel that the £65 million asking price is unrealistic for the 24-year-old and they will now walk away from the negotiating table.

The report claims that the club will now make Moises Caicedo their priority midfield target, which puts them back in direct competition with Chelsea.

The Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder could cost as much as £80 million but those in charge of deals at Old Trafford aren't put off.

Taking into account the player being three years younger than Mount and having longer left on his contract at the AMEX Stadium, they are more willing to meet the asking price.

Chelsea fans were already worried that Manchester City's attempts to sign Declan Rice ahead of Arsenal would make the Gunners' competitors for Caicedo but now they'll have to battle United, who can offer Champions League football next season unlike Todd Boehly's club.

United felt like they were being charged more just for who they are, comparing it to how quickly and cheaply they sold Mateo Kovacic to City, and also felt £55 million was already favourable to how much Raheem Sterling swapped between those two clubs last summer.

As well as shifting their midfield preference United are also set to up their pursuit of a striker, with Rasmus Hojland and Randal Kolo Muani top of the shopping list, after they walked away from any deal for Harry Kane feeling he'd be too expensive.
