Study shows how every Premier League club was affected by VAR in the 2022/23 season
VAR decisions had a mixed impact on Premier League clubs in 2022/23
A study has shown how Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions affected every Premier League club in the 2022/23 season. The study, conducted by ESPN, found that VAR had a mixed impact on clubs, with some benefiting from the technology and others being negatively affected.
The biggest winners from VAR were Brentford, who were six decisions better off thanks to the technology. Fulham, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United also benefited from VAR decisions.
At the other end of the scale, Manchester City were the biggest losers from VAR, with four key decisions going against them. Brighton, Leeds United, Leicester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Wolves, West Ham United, Southampton, and Crystal Palace were also in the negatives in terms of VAR decisions.
Manchester United, Chelsea, and Everton were the only clubs to be level in the VAR equation, with neither benefiting nor being negatively affected by the technology.
The study's findings suggest that VAR is still a work in progress and that there is room for improvement. However, it also shows that the technology can have a significant impact on the outcome of matches.
