Sheffield Wednesday come from 4-0 down to win League One play-off semi-final in insane scenes

Sheffield Wednesday pulled off the greatest comeback in English Football League playoff history on Thursday night, overturning a 4-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Peterborough United 5-3 on penalties after extra time in the second leg of their semi-final.

The Owls, who finished 19 points above Peterborough in the regular season, looked dead and buried after Friday's hammering at London Road. But they produced a stunning display at Hillsborough to book their place in the League One play-off final at Wembley on May 29.

Michael Smith and Lee Gregory gave Wednesday hope with first-half goals, and Reece James made it 3-0 in the 71st minute. Liam Palmer then scored an equalizer in the 98th minute to send the tie into extra time.
Peterborough took the lead in extra time through an own goal from Gregory, but Callum Paterson equalized in the 112th minute to make it 5-5 on aggregate.

The tie went to penalties, and Wednesday prevailed 5-3 after Jack Hunt scored the winning spot-kick.

The comeback was the biggest in Football League playoff history, and it will go down as one of the greatest moments in Sheffield Wednesday's history.

The Owls will now face the winners of the other semi-final between Barnsley and Bolton Wanderers in the final at Wembley. The two teams will meet on Friday night, with the first leg finishing 1-1.

Wednesday fans will be hoping for a repeat of their heroics against Peterborough, and they will be confident of returning to the Championship after suffering relegation two seasons ago.
