Man Utd and Newcastle 'leading the race' to sign Sadio Mane from Bayern Munich
Liverpool legend Sadio Mane has been linked with a shock move to Manchester United this summer.
There are few things that make supporters' blood boil more than signing for a rival club, and Mane could do exactly that, forever tarnishing his reputation in Merseyside.
The 31-year-old joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2016 where he went on to register 120 goals and 48 assists across 269 appearances for the Reds.
He won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup as well as a whole host of personal accolades, establishing himself as a Liverpool hero.
However, following last summer's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, the Senegal international decided to call time on his Anfield career, opting to join German giants Bayern Munich instead.
Despite managing a respectable 12 goals and six assists across all competitions for the Bundesliga club, it has been a largely disappointing season for the forward.
While an alleged bust-up with teammate Leroy Sane after Bayern's 3-0 Champions League defeat to Manchester City looks to have sealed his fate, with Mane tipped to leave Thomas Tuchel's side at the end of the season.
Multiple reports have rumoured him with a return to the Premier League. And while Liverpool are not among those vying for his signature, Reds fans will have an eagle eye on his whereabouts, following rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford.
Where could Mane go?
Liverpool and Manchester United have a rivalry dating back to 1894 when the two sides first met, and any move between the two cities is often seen as an almighty betrayal.
Be that as it may, the Red Devils are 'leading the race' to sign Mane this summer, according to Sky Sports Germany, alongside third-placed Newcastle United.
Chelsea have also been heavily linked with a move for the player, but their lack of Champions League football could rule them out.
However, there are doubts over whether Mane will seek to leave Bayern this summer, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claiming that Mane and his entourage have no plans to leave this summer, and the player "hopes to stay and win titles next season".
Mane previously rejected the chance to play for United in 2015, choosing to stay at St Marys for a further year before joining up with Jurgen Klopp.
Speaking ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, Louis van Gaal admitted he tried to sign him whilst in charge at Old Trafford.
“I wanted him when I was the manager at Man United,” the Dutchman recalled.
“I chased him at the time. I am a fan of Mane. He can break open a match and I would say Senegal will really miss him.”
