'Complicated' update on Mason Mount's Chelsea future surfaces
Chelsea are unlikely to hand Mason Mount a new contract, a report has claimed. According to Fabrizio Romano, talks between both is "really complicated".
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "I think they have to make a decision very soon because they can't be there with the risk of a player out of contract in the summer of 2024 and to lose him for free. So, this is the first point."
Mount has started 20 games in the Premier League this season, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
The England playmaker has only a year to run on his Blues contract and has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, while Arsenal and Manchester United are also said to be keen to enter the fray.
Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher and Edouard Mendy are the 'prime candidates' to part ways with Chelsea in the summer, the Daily Mail reports.
It was previously reported that Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep Mount at the club as he likes him as a player.
Chelsea have a bloated squad and the first task of the incoming manager Pochettino would be to trim it.
The good thing about these departures is that Chelsea would likely be able to get good money for all four players. It would help the club pass the Financial Fair Play check and boost the transfer kitty so Poch could sign the players he likes.
According to the Daily Mail, Mauricio Pochettino has already presented his priorities in the summer transfer window to Chelsea's duo of sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Lawrence Stewart.
Despite the need to balance the books, some positions need to be strengthened, with Pochettino keen to sign a striker, a midfielder and a goalkeeper.
Lautaro Martinez is Chelsea's new forward target after Victor Osimhen's price tag sky-rocketed.
In midfield, Declan Rice is still on Chelsea's wishlist, as well as Alexis Mac Allister who is sure to leave Brighton this summer. However, Arsenal and Liverpool appear to be better positioned in the Rice and Mac Allister races, respectively.
In goal, the Blues might go for another World Cup winner with Argentina in Emiliano Martinez.
Apart from signing new players, Pochettino wants to persuade Mason Mount to stay and sign a new deal with the club.
The incoming head coach will also chat with Romelu Lukaku and figure out if he can count on the Belgian next season.
