Awoniyi Put Nottingham Forest Ahead as Man City Edges Closer to Premier League Title
Manchester City are closing in on the Premier League title thanks to Taiwo Awoniyi’s strike against Arsenal.
The Forest forward slotted home in the 19th minute at the City Ground after a sloppy Martin Odegaard pass towards Morgan Gibbs-White.
Surging forward from midfield, the former Wolves starlet played Awoniyi in to convert from close range and make it 1-0 to Steve Cooper’s side.
While there’s still a long way to go, victory for Forest would see them secure their Premier League survival.
Forest would be on 37 points in 16th spot – four points ahead of 17th placed Everton with a game to play.
But Awoniyi’s strike – his fifth goal in his last three outings – could have bigger repercussions at the top end of the table.
A win for Cooper’s men would secure the Premier League title for Manchester City – their third consecutive championship.
Even a draw for Arsenal at Forest would prove huge for the Citizens, as they would then need just a point from their last three matches.
Jamie O’Hara was live on talkSPORT’s Gameday Phone-In when Forest scored the goal to put them ahead and the former Tottenham midfielder didn’t miss his opportunity to stick the knife into Mikel Arteta’s side when discussing Spurs’ misfortunes.
He said: “The best thing that has happened to Spurs this season is watching Arsenal crumble like a deck of cards, folded they have!”
