Arsenal interesed in Cancelo as Arteta plots City reunion

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes Joao Cancelo would fit right into his style of play at the Emirates. The Gunners have reportedly entered the race to sign the Manchester City star this summer.

Cancelo was surprisingly let go by City in January to join Bayern Munich on loan. He fell out of favour under Pep Guardiola and was swiftly moved out of the Etihad.

Bayern are not expected to activate their option to buy Cancelo, which was set at £62million. He has struggled to gain a regular spot at the Allianz Arena since he joined.

However, his long-term future at City also appears to be in serious doubt after he was booed by the club's supporters during the recent Champions League quarter-final. A report from 90min claims City are not set to integrate Cancelo back into their squad next season.

Bayern are said to remain interested in the 28-year-old but not at the price previously agreed with City. Barcelona are also named as admirers of the Portugal international as Xavi plots a deal for a right-back.

But Arsenal are also claimed to be keen on the player. Gunners boss Arteta coached Cancelo for a few months at City following his arrival in the summer of 2019.

And he is keen on bringing him to the Emirates in the upcoming window. Arteta sees Cancelo as a player who can slot straight into his tactical system.

Arteta has already bought two players from former club City, signing Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko last summer. Cancelo would provide competition at both left-back and right-back in the north Londoners' squad.
