Barcelona and Ter Stegen Eyeing 21st Century Clean Sheet Record in La Liga
Another matchday and another clean sheet. Barcelona and Marc-Andre ter Stegen closed out the 30th round of La Liga fixtures with another clean sheet when Atlético Madrid visited the Camp Nou Spotify. After Sunday's win, the Blaugrana have now kept a clean sheet in 23 matches in the domestic competition.
This record allowed Ter Stegen to equal Claudio Bravo as the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in a single season in the history of Barcelona. The Chilean goalkeeper achieved that statistic in the 2014/15 campaign, his first at the club. The same season in which Ter Stegen landed in the Catalan capital, although his role was focused on the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.
So, with just eight games to go until the end of LaLiga, all the indications are that the German will end up as the sole leader of this particular historical ranking at the club. Not only that, but he can also remain at the top of the overall ranking of European teams in the 21st century.
The record for the most clean sheets in a single season by an Old Continent club in this century is held by Chelsea. It was during the 2004/05 season with Petr Cech in goal and Jose Mourinho on the bench. The London club racked up 25 games without conceding a goal out of 38, 24 of which were thanks to the Czech goalkeeper.
A tier below them were Atlético Madrid during the 2015/16 season and Manchester United in 2008/09. Oblak kept a clean sheet in 24 games, while United's Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar kept 21 of his team's 24 clean sheets.
Here's a look at the all-time record of European teams with the most clean sheets in the 21st century:
