Facundo Pellistri picks up bizarre yellow card during Real Betis clash

Manchester United fans can't believe the referee's decision to caution Facundo Pellistri against Real Betis.

Pellistri was handed his first Man United start by Erik ten Hag for his side's Europa League last-16 second-leg tie on Thursday.

And he looked bright as he made runs down the wing, delivering balls into the box, having starred in the reverse fixture last week.

The 21-year-old, though, sent social media wild in the 29th minute when he was inexplicably yellow carded following an incident with Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez.

He overran with the ball and slid in an attempt to retrieve it. He managed to get a foot on the ball, with Rodriguez clashing into him.

But the match referee adjudged Pellistri to have fouled him as he brandished a yellow card to the dismay of people online.

One Twitter user wrote: "That's honestly the worst yellow card I've ever seen in my life."

A second tweeted: "Atrocious call, he got the ball a half second before the Betis player was even on him."

A third added: "How is that a yellow card. Absurd."

A fourth said: "That Pellistri booking is one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen."

Another commented: "So you get a yellow for winning the ball and a yellow for not winning the ball these days."

Colour commentator Robbie Savage also couldn't understand the decision to book Pellistri as he slammed the inconsistency of the officiating.
