Marcus Rashford on course to break Man United curse against Liverpool since 1954
Marcus Rashford has been unstoppable in 2023 so now feels as good a time as any to break a record that has stood for 68 years.
Rashford will once again be Manchester United’s main hope against Liverpool having netted 16 goals in 18 appearances since the season resumed after the World Cup.
The England star was only a second-half substitute in the 3-1 FA Cup win over West Ham in midweek to keep him fit for the trip to Anfield.
talkSPORT’s Darren Ambrose claimed that Rashford is the best player in the Premier League and in the conversation with Kylian Mbappe to be the world’s top star.
His United teammate Phil Jones went one step further ahead of the Carabao Cup final triumph, claiming the 25-year-old is out on his own.
Rashford’s stunning exploits in front of goal this season started with in the 2-1 win over Liverpool in August.
Should either he or Jadon Sancho find themselves on the scoresheet this weekend then they will become the first English player to score home and away league goals against Liverpool for the Red Devils in a single season since Tommy Taylor in 1954.
And should Rashford be the one then it would continue a remarkable trend when facing United’s arch-rivals, which has seen him notch five Premier League goals against them already.
He is now just one behind the club’s all-time record scorer Wayne Rooney for the most in a Red Devils shirt in this fixture.
Not only has Rashford achieved the feat in almost half the games, he’s also been finding the net playing in a far inferior United side.
His most recent goal against them contributed to what was only his third win over Liverpool in 14 attempts in all competitions.
The other two victories were also Rashford-inspired, with the forward scoring twice during a 2-1 win in the 2017/18 Premier League campaign, in addition to a goal and assist in a 3-2 win for United in the fourth round of the 2020/21 FA Cup.
Yet away to Jurgen Klopp’s men it’s a very different story, with Rashford yet to taste victory or even bag a senior goal at Anfield.
As it stands, he is alongside Eric Cantona, Rudd van Nistelrooy, Paul Scholes and even his former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in never finding the net at Anfield playing for United.
Rashford is the only one of that illustrious group who still has time to change that and betting on current form, you’d be wise to back him…
