Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst was seen touching the ‘This Is Anfield’ sign prior to their embarrassing defeat by Liverpool.

On Sunday, United were no match for Jurgen Klopp’s rampant Liverpool side as they came out 7-0 winners thanks to goals from Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Roberto Firmino.

It was a truly humbling afternoon for Erik ten Hag’s men as their lingering hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple went up in smoke.

Prior to kickoff, as both teams were walking out of the tunnel at Anfield, United’s January signing Weghorst was seen touching the famous ‘This Is Anfield’ sign.

Touching the sign on the way out is often a tradition for Liverpool players but it’s strange to see a rival player put their hand on the sign before facing the Reds.

However, it has previously been reported that Weghorst has dreamt of playing for Liverpool since he was a kid.

According to Caught Offside, the Dutchman told DAZN back in 2020: “I always found Liverpool very special. I still get goosebumps from ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

“There are other great English clubs too, and I always liked Milan because so many Dutch played there.”

Whilst in 2018, Weghorst told Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf: “I’ve dreamt of [playing for Liverpool] since childhood.”

Fans were quick to react on social media.

One said: “Why did Weghorst touch the "This is Anfield" sign? Man forgot what team he was playing for.”

Another tweeted: “Weghorst tapping the This Is Anfield sign was clearly a jinx for United.”

A third fan added: “I see Weghorst touched the “This Is Anfield” sign walking out yesterday. Someone give him the memo he’s a Man United player. Think that’s the only time I will ever see a United player touch that sign.”

On the back of their Anfield embarrassment, United have the chance to put things right as they take on Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday night.
