'Wasted hundreds of millions to be 10th in the table': ex-Bayern CEO slams Chelsea spending
"English clubs spend crazy money in an irrational way, while other clubs in Europe go ahead between scandals and financial crises, but are still able to bring trophies at home," former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Corriere dello Sport.
"Chelsea wasted hundreds of millions of euros just to find themselves tenth in the table, it’s absurd.
"The globalisation of the market has created an incredible disparity. Once upon a time, there was an internal market and money circulated within a system. Wealth must be distributed in a better way."
According to Transfermarkt, Chelsea spent over €600m in the last two transfer windows after the Todd Boehly-led consortium completed the club takeover.
This is a long-term investment, with most of the new signings aged 23 or younger - but so far, it's not helping the Blues to rise in the Premier League table.
