Salah left Chelsea 'in tears' and no one expected him to be a top player: Mikel Obi

Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel John Obi opened up on how emotionally shattered Mohamed Salah was before leaving Chelsea in February 2015.

Speaking to Dubai Eye FM Mikel said: "I think [Salah] was having a bad game and then obviously Mourinho came in and ripped into him, massively ripped into him."

Mikel also claimed that no one at Chelsea expected Salah to go on and become a top player.

"No [no one expected him to go to the top," Mikel said.

"He was in tears, and what happened is [Mourinho] didn't let him back onto the pitch in the second half. He took him off.

"It would have been easy to just take him off and say 'you're not playing well, off you go, sit down, you're not going back onto the pitch.' But he ripped into him and took him off."

Salah turned his lemons into lemonades after that. First, he headed to Italy to play on loan for Fiorentina before joining Roma at the end of that loan spell in 2016.

In the summer of 2017, Salah returned to England to play for Liverpool in a deal worth €42m. The rest as they say is history.
