Reece James 'groomed' as potential future captain

Reece James is seen at Chelsea as a potential future captain, according to The Telegraph's Matt Law.

The 23-year-old's influence at the club has grown ever since he signed a new bumper deal until 2028. Initially a quiet member of the dressing room, James is becoming increasingly outspoken in media.

He's already held in high regard by Chelsea's owners and Graham Potter who believes that James could become a club legend.

As it stands, Cesar Azpilicueta is Chelsea's captain, while Thiago Silva has assumed the vice-captaincy role after Jorginho's transfer to Arsenal.

Both defenders have their contracts expire in 2024 which means that James would have 12 to 18 months to grow into a leadership role.

The report adds that Mason Mount was another player considered for the captaincy role in the long term. However, his future is in doubt as he is yet to extend his contract beyond June 2024 - and the talks are at a standstill.
