Last night during the Merseyside derby with Liverpool, fans caught a glimpse of the England international’s water bottle and the scribblings on the bottle were far from rudimentary. Instead, Pickford’s bottle came complete with diagrams, percentages and everything he could need to give himself the best possible chance of saving a penalty.

On the night itself, the bottle wasn’t needed beyond its usual rehydration purposes as Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners with both goals coming from open play. In fact, Pickford himself had a bit of a howler for the opening goal as he came out to the edge of the box to meet a Darwin Nunez cross and was left in no man’s land as Mohamed Salah half-volleyed into a wide open net.

Unfortunately for Pickford, the bottle had no instructions on where to stand on opposition crosses, but it did, however, come with a crazy amount of penalty detail.

The bottle had data on each of Liverpool’s four most likely candidates and where they tend to shoot from spot kicks.

The four candidates were Cody Gakpo, James Milner, Salah and Nunez. Incidentally, in terms of which way Pickford should dive in case of a penalty, it wasn’t too hard to remember as all four of Liverpool’s penalty takers predominantly shoot to the goalkeeper’s left.

Gakpo has shot this direction as frequently as 75% of the time so far and both Milner and Nunez also shoot in that direction at least 60% of the time.

Salah is a little bit more varied with his penalties, but he still shoots right most frequently at 46.7% of the time.

The bottle also had a diagram of where the players placed their penalties and even instructions as to what to do as the players prepared to shoot.

For both Salah and Milner, the instruction is to ‘check run-up’ whereas for Nunez the instruction is to ‘wait right.’

For Gakpo, the instruction is particularly simple as it states ‘GK left.’

This is far from the first time Pickford has had notes on his bottle. Back at the 2018 World Cup against Colombia, it is believed that he had notes on the opposition takers and back then it worked out very well for himself and England. Against West Ham in 2021, he also had a similar set of notes.

Although the penalty instructions weren’t needed yesterday, you’d imagine such diagrams will become an increasingly common occurrence on the water bottles of goalkeepers.
