Newcastle United fans filmed cleaning up London after a heavy night of partying before the Carabao Cup final

Newcastle United fans were filmed cleaning up Trafalgar Square after a heavy night of drinking before the Carabao Cup final.

Thousands of supporters have descended on London ahead of the Toon's first major cup final since 1999 - ironically a defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup.

The Magpies are hoping to rewrite history and end a 68-year trophy drought at Wembley on Sunday. Their fans are turning out in serious numbers and after travelling from the north-east to the capital, completely took over Trafalgar Square on Saturday.

It was a sea of black and white outside Nelson's Column, with a real party atmosphere created at the historic landmark in Westminster.

The scenes were nothing short of incredible as fans belted out chants and let off pyro in their team's colours.

Referee Michael Oliver, who supports Newcastle, was spotted, while co-owners Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben were also in attendance.

A whole lot of alcohol was consumed, meaning plenty of litter in the form of bottles and cans were left behind. But a video doing the rounds on social media showed fans doing their bit to tidy up the entirety of the area.

It was a serious clean-up job but pictures emerged online afterwards and there was not a single bit of rubbish in sight.

They followed up the actions of the Japan fans during their World Cup, who made sure their area was perfectly clean after every game as part of a long-standing tradition.

Fans hailed those who stayed behind to tidy up with one writing: "Good on them for cleaning up after themselves. More people should follow that example."

Another said: "Good on them. This is exactly the kind of thing that we need. Everyone having a mint time, then leaving the place as we found it."

A third commented: "That’s made my day, well done!"

A fourth added: "That’s how it should be, well done NUFC supporters."

A fifth weighed in: "Not a single arrest, not a piece of litter, the best fans in the world."

Newcastle sold out their 32,000 Wembley allocation in rapid time and are sure to make a lot of noise for what promises to be a cracker of a cup final.
