Man Utd fans think Barcelona were given the softest penalty of the season for Bruno Fernandes foul

Barcelona have taken the lead against Manchester United in this evening's Europa League play-off second leg thanks to a Robert Lewandowski penalty - but supporters think it was a poor decision.

Both sides came into this game with momentum following a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou last Thursday. Old Trafford was electric from the off, with United coming close to taking the lead through Fernandes.

The Portugal international was through on goal but fired his shot straight at Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Fernandes was at the heart of the action at the opposite end of the pitch, although for less than positive reasons.

He pulled Alejandro Balde down inside the penalty area, with referee Clement Turpin pointing to the spot. Lewandowski stepped up and managed to get his penalty past David de Gea, who didn't do enough to keep it out.

Supporters on social media believe United have been unfairly penalised, claiming there wasn't much contact between Fernandes and Balde.

One person said: "In what world is that a penalty oh my word."

Someone put: "That is never a penalty."

A third tweeted: "Could be one of the softest I've ever seen."

While someone added: "If that's a penalty then there should be about 10 in every game. If this costs us the tie..."

Barcelona are without Pedri and Gavi due to injury and suspension respectively. Sergio Busquets is back at the heart of midfield after missing the first leg with an ankle sprain.

United have Lisandro Martinez back in the starting line-up after serving a one-match ban. Marcel Sabitzer is also back, but it's Fred who starts alongside Casemiro following an impressive second half in Catalonia seven days ago.

Pre-match, Ten Hag said: "Tonight, if we hold ourselves accountable to our own rules and standards, if players and fans push each other and we show the same fearlessness as last Thursday we have a fantastic chance of reaching the next round."
