Liverpool walked away from potential £60M deal for Enzo Fernandez in January
Liverpool were put off by Benfica’s initial asking price of £60million for Enzo Fernandez – well before Chelsea paid £107million.
That’s according to Goal, who report that Liverpool had registered an interest in signing Fernandez.
The midfielder had dazzled at the World Cup with Argentina and Liverpool were keen on bringing him to Anfield.
However, Benfica initially demanded £60million for Fernandez – a fee that effectively scared Liverpool off.
Benfica had only signed Fernandez in the summer of 2022, striking a deal with River Plate worth around €18million (£16million).
Liverpool seemingly didn’t really like that his price had almost quadrupled in a matter of months and chose not to make a firm move.
Chelsea not only had no such qualms, but ended up paying above and beyond.
The Blues agreed a deal worth a staggering £107million on deadline day and manage to beat the clock to bring Fernandez in.
Fernandez has already shown real promise for Chelsea and produced a superb assist against West Ham United.
Liverpool may well wish that they had Fernandez in their ranks but snubbing a £60million deal points to one thing.
The Reds have been heavily linked with Jude Bellingham and that deal may even cost more than the £107million Chelsea paid for Fernandez.
Had Liverpool spent £60million or even more on Fernandez in January, their pot for Bellingham may have been hampered.
