Bruno Fernandes angered Barcelona players after booting the ball at Frenkie De Jong when he was on the ground.
Manchester United welcomed Barcelona to Old Trafford for their Europa League last 32 second leg clash on Thursday evening.
There was still all to play for after the first leg at Camp Nou ended 2-2.
Barcelona took the lead in controversial fashion.
The Catalan giants were awarded a spot-kick in the 18th minute when Bruno Fernandes was adjudged to have dragged down Alejandro Balde inside the box.
Fernandes was livid and protested to the referee in an attempt to get the decision overturned, but to no avail.
Robert Lewandowski stepped up and he just about managed to find a way past David de Gea.
Man Utd restored parity within minutes of the restart.
Fernandes found Fred just outside the box and the Brazilian produced a lovely touch and finish to level the scores.
