Howard Webb calls all PL refs to emergency meeting over VAR blunders in Arsenal, Brighton and Chelsea game

Howard Webb has reportedly been forced to call an emergency meeting after two embarrassing VAR blunders were made in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Both Arsenal and Brighton were potentially cost vital points as a pair of experienced top-flight referees failed to correctly adjudicate on crucial calls.

Firstly, video official Lee Mason forgot to draw the right lines to check whether Brentford's Christian Norgaard was offside in the build-up to Ivan Toney's equalising goal against title hopefuls Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Then, in another shocking decision, Brighton saw a perfectly good goal ruled out in their draw at Crystal Palace when John Brooks drew the offside line from the wrong defender.

And also the Chelsea game where the hand ball by Soucek was blatantly overlooked.

So outrageous were the mistakes that Webb - chief of refereeing for PGMOL - was forced to swiftly contact Arsenal and Brighton to acknowledge 'significant errors in the VAR process'.

It was the darkest day in Webb's short time in the role - and he's responded by hauling all of his officials into Stockley Park for a review of the VAR system on Tuesday.

Per the Daily Mail, all Premier League referees, assistant referees and VAR officials must attend the mandatory meeting as Webb seeks to avoid any further catastrophes.

It is believed that 'all options will be on the table' at the meeting, with Webb and his superiors intent on restoring confidence in Premier League officiating.

After Mason's error potentially cost Arsenal two massive points in the title race, ex-Premier League referee Keith Hackett called for the 'serial offender' to be dumped from the competition.

"Lee would be towards the bottom in the list of best performers. He has seemingly passed the point of requiring operational assistance, he doesn't have a place any more," Hackett wrote in his most recent column for the Mail.

"He has had long enough now, knowing what is required of the VAR.

"It's a tough environment, refereeing, but if you're a footballer and you don't perform, you are out of the side. The same needs to happen with those in charge of officiating the game if they don't match up."

Whether senior figures at PGMOL agree with Hackett remains to be seen, but action has already been taken in respect of Brooks.
