Carragher: I think I'd take Van Dijk's place in the Liverpool backline at the moment
Jamie Carragher has absolutely torn into Liverpool after their awful 5-2 loss to Real Madrid.
Speaking after the game, he told CBS Sports: “That was shambolic from Liverpool. Embarrassing.
“We've made excuses for them all season, but that was a disgrace in that second half. To lose that half 3-0 when you're attacking the Kop at 2-2 and in a knockout game. Shambolic.
“Liverpool all season have been an absolute shambles defensively. This team had a great defensive record last year.
“So this Liverpool defence now, who we’ve been told for years have some of the best players in the world, can’t cope.
“For years they’ve had a front six in front of them that have worked harder and smarter than any other team in world football, and now that’s gone it’s completely fallen apart.
“Defensively, and I’m not that horrible, but Virgil van Dijk said I wouldn’t get in that back four about two months ago. I think I'd take his place at the moment.”
One can’t really debate with Carragher when it comes to criticizing Liverpool’s defending, which was abysmal against Madrid. It ended up costing them dearly, allowing the visitors to make a comeback and go home with a huge lead.
