Benni McCarthy was praised outside Old Trafford - and his reaction shows he is loved by Man Utd fans
Manchester United made some big signings last summer, bringing the likes of Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Christian Eriksen to Old Trafford.
But the arrival of coach Benni McCarthy has arguably been as important - if not *more* important - than any of those big-name players.
McCarthy joined Erik ten Hag’s backroom team as a first-team coach and has been hard at work improving the club’s forward players.
When the South African arrived at Man Utd, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho were out of form and struggling for confidence.
But Rashford, in particular, has benefited hugely from McCarthy’s tuition. We’re not even in March yet and the England international has already scored a career-best 24 goals this season.
After a nightmare start to the current campaign United’s fortunes have been transformed, thanks largely to the excellent work of Ten Hag and his backroom staff - including McCarthy.
Benni McCarthy's reaction to praise from Man Utd fans
The retired striker, who is best remembered for his spells with FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers, was praised by United fans outside Old Trafford in a video that’s gone viral on social media.
“You are doing a fantastic job with this team,” McCarthy is told by one fan.
The modest coach responded: “Thank you - that’s the manager, it’s the manager.”
However, McCarthy did add that he’s got Rashford in the right place.

Former Premier League striker Ian Wright recently paid tribute to McCarthy for the impact he’s had on Rashford.
“I think the acquisition of Benni McCarthy, a striker coach, has helped him,” Wright said.
“When you look at the movement for that goal - like Harry Maguire talking about how his heading has improved - it was brilliant.
“And that says to me that someone like Benni McCarthy’s working very closely with him. He’s improved no end.”
