The highly publicized negotiations between Benfica and the Premier League giants, Chelsea over the 2022 World Cup’s Young Player of the Tournament, Enzo Fernandez has collapsed according to latest reports.

Fernandez has been the talk of the town in this January transfer window amidst the speculations over the fact that Chelsea were aiming for the youngster after his stunning performance for Argentina at the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup.

His spectacular performance had aided Lionel Messi-led Argentina in their World Cup victory and had grabbed the Young Player of the Tournament award.

After catching the attention of several Premier League giants including Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea, he was being heavily linked with a move this January. Chelsea were the ones who were at the forefront of leading these negotiations for the midfielder. 

Benfica unwilling to sell Enzo Fernandez outside Release Clause

However, trusted sources have revealed now that the ongoing talks between the two clubs, Chelsea and Benfica have collapsed.

South American journalist CLMerlo, had tweeted earlier that the negotiation for Enzo Fernandez to move to Chelsea has collapsed because Benfica has given up on selling him outside of the “Release Clause” after several days of negotiations.

Benfica, the Portuguese clubs had wanted to sell Fernandez for an amount no less than the midfielder’s £106 million release clause.

However, the Prem side had a counter offer that would smoothen the deal from their side as they would pay the total amount in three instalments to escape any financial fair play restrictions.

This mammoth price tag placed one Enzo Fernandez is a result of the World Cup, it has made fans and critics frown alike, with most of them questioning the hefty fee. 

Gary Neville had earlier expressed the same emotion in his tweet, saying,

“Are Chelsea paying €127m for Enzo Fernandez? That’s one hell of a price,” he tweeted. “A very good player but bloody hell!”
