Tchouameni spotted at NBA Game during Madrid vs Villarreal clash, issues public apology after backlash from fans

As Real Madrid were facing Villarreal away in a key Copa del Rey clash, Aurelien Tchouameni was watching the match between Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons at an NBA event in Paris.

The Frenchman was out with an injury and could not be called up for the game. However, some Madrid fans didn't appreciate that he attended a basketball game instead of watching his own team.

JerseyCityFC (Twitter): "You’re still getting paid by the team. Go watch your team play. This ain’t a vacation. Every former Madrid player did that."

iamdontoh (Twitter): "There seems to be a lack of discipline in this team."

Zakinho__ (Twitter): "If this was Bale... If I speak."

hugocuevas28 (Twitter): "What Tchouameni is doing shows a lack of respect towards the coach, his teammates and the fans. Your team is risking getting eliminated and instead of supporting them at least behind the TV, you go to watch the NBA. Frankly, seems very ugly to me."

fondopipero_ (Twitter): "Can you imagine Casemiro going to watch the NBA while Madrid are playing in the cup? It's not criticism towards Tchouameni, but rather to point out the greatness of those who have played here."

Once the game was done and dusted -- with Madrid turning the match around and winning 3-2 -- Tchouameni issued an apology on his Twitter.

"I apologize to my club, to the coaching staff, to my teammates and to the Madrid fans for attending an event at a time when we were playing an important match in the cup. I was paying close attention to what was happening in Villarreal at every time, but I didn't make the right decision. I am very sorry," he wrote.

The club is unlikely to sanction Aurelien since he is injured and has gotten some days off to recover. However, this will affect his image in the eyes of the club and the fans.
