Lunin 'frustrated' as Ancelotti confirms Courtois will start in cup game v Villarreal
Andriy Lunin started in the previous cup game against Cacereno and expected to play against Villarreal this week. However, Carlo Ancelotti revealed in the pre-match presser that Thibaut Courtois would be playing between the sticks instead.
According to Relevo, Lunin is "frustrated" by this decision from the coach and is saddened that Ancelotti didn't tell him in person. The Ukrainian goalkeeper believes that he is in good form and deserved a place in the starting XI for this game.
As a reminder, the second-choice goalkeepers traditionally play the cup games in Spain.
However, it appears that Carletto doesn't have complete confidence in the backup and will play Courtois against a more solid opponent. The same happened last season when Thibaut was the chosen one for the quarter-final against Athletic Bilbao.
Relevo add that Lunin will decide his future next summer. He has a contract until 2024 and if he decides to leave in search of regular playing time, Real Madrid will not stop him. The goalkeeper has attracted serious interest across Europe.
This term so far, Andriy has played 7 games for Madrid, conceding 4 goals and keeping 3 clean sheets. Most of those games were played in October when Courtois was injured. Once the Belgian returned, Lunin dropped to the bench again.
